Apprentice Success Recognised!

Merlin Powder Characterisation were thrilled when our apprentice was recognised for her achievements by Halesowen College with an article in the local paper.

Our Compaction Scientist Charlotte Cartwright has studied for a Level 5 Laboratory Scientist Apprenticeship at our powder characterisation laboratory in Brierley Hill, whilst completing a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Chemistry, at Halesowen College in the West Midlands.

As part of the course, she had to plan and execute a scientific project.  A poster was created of the results and she gave a successful compaction simulation poster presentation at the Compaction Simulation Forum in September 2019, in Bordeaux. To view the poster presentation, click here. 

The Compaction Simulation Forum is an annual meeting of formulation scientists and pharmaceutical students across the world, aimed at sharing current scientific knowledge and advancements in compaction science. The forum location alternates between the USA and Europe.  

Charlotte’s role at Merlin includes performing powder characterisation tests throughout our laboratory, such as powder flowability testing, API and material characterisation, and compression science services. 

Education provider Pearson, chose Charlotte as a case study candidate for the presentation, based on her successful academic and career achievements whilst working at Merlin. 

Charlotte’s presentation and research was centred around the characterisation of pharmaceutical polyols by yield pressure determination. The aim of the research was to compare the compression properties of a group of excipients by the method of Heckel testing. 

Charlotte was particularly interested in investigating the material characteristics of this group of excipients and their properties for tablet manufacturing.

It is very important for young pharmaceutical students, apprentices, and employees to be given the opportunity to present current research and findings at events such as the Compaction Simulation Forum. This is as it encourages the development and progression of industry knowledge, whilst providing networking opportunities and industry experience. 

We are proud of the skills progression and career achievements Charlotte has displayed throughout her time at Merlin Power Characterisation. We look forward to seeing her continued development within Merlin and the pharmaceutical industry.
